The Proposed Project

The Department of National Defence (DND) has proposed a project to upgrade Building B160, located at 9 Wing, Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Gander, Newfoundland and Labrador, for occupancy. Building B160 is a 465 square metre (m2) heavy equipment storage building that was constructed in 2011. At that time, Building B160 was equipped with a washroom, but as the existing water and sanitary sewer lines ended outside of the area of construction at Building B128 (Main Headquarters) on Fidelitas Street, Building B160 was not connected to these existing site services. Interior work for this project includes the installation of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system that provides heating and air conditioning to accommodate occupancy year-round, a vehicle exhaust extraction system consisting of four wall mounted centrifugal exhaust fans, and a sprinkler system. Exterior work includes installation of an oil-water separator and a sewage lift station with connection to existing base sanitary sewer lines, a water line with connection to existing base services (including an additional hydrant), and a parking area with exterior lighting for ten personal vehicles. Soil and groundwater at the site may be contaminated and will require characterization to determine appropriate disposal and/or on-site management requirements.
