The Proposed Project

Colchester Harbour is located at the west end of Lake Erie, approximately 35 km east of Leamington, Ontario. The harbour is an active recreational facility managed by the Town of Essex through a management agreement with Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Small Craft Harbours Branch (SCH).

The Town of Essex, with support from DFO SCH, is planning on undertaking a maintenance dredging project at the Colchester Harbour. The proposed project involves the excavation of approximately 3,000 cubic meters of silt/sand material as the harbour has filled in to the extent that navigation is difficult for vessels using the harbour in low water conditions. To correct this situation, a barge and excavator will be used to clear out affected sections of the harbour. All excavated material will be removed from the site and deposited in Lake Erie below navigational depths. Pending the completion of the appropriate regulatory and environmental approvals, this project is anticipated to take place in mid to late July, 2021.
