Marathon Palladium Project – Signing of the Amended Joint Review Panel Agreement and Terms of Reference

What is happening?

February 3, 2021 — The Honourable Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Environment and Climate Change, and the Honourable Jeff Yurek, Minister of Environment, Conservation and Parks, signed the Amended Joint Review Panel Agreement and Terms of Reference for the environmental assessment of the proposed Marathon Palladium Project, located near the town of Marathon, Ontario.

The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada appreciates the public and Indigenous groups' comments on the draft Amended Joint Review Panel Agreement and considered them in the finalization of the Amended Agreement.

The Amended Agreement establishes the mandate and terms of reference of the Joint Review Panel, its composition, as well as the procedures and timelines for the environmental assessment.

On November 16, 2020, Minister Wilkinson and Minister Yurek announced the appointment of the three members of the Joint Review Panel who will carry out the environmental assessment.

The Joint Review Panel is now tasked with assessing the potential environmental effects of the project, identifying mitigation measures and follow-up programs required, and concluding whether the project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects. At the end of their review, the Joint Review Panel will prepare a report for the federal and provincial Ministers of Environment.
