Grassy Mountain Coal Project
Extension of Time Limit for Issuance of Decision Statement

April 3, 2020 — The Minister of Environment and Climate Change, under subsection 54(3) of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012, has extended by 90 days the time limit for issuance of the Decision Statement for the proposed Grassy Mountain Coal Project to recognize the extenuating circumstances arising from the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts to communities, businesses, and stakeholders.

The Minister has also modified the time limit for the submission of the report by the Joint Review Panel to the Minister as follows:

  • The timeline for the Joint Review Panel to submit its report is extended to 520 days (approximately 17 months) from the establishment of the Panel.
  • The timeline for the decision statement is 150 days (approximately 5 months) from the submission of the Joint Review Panel's Report.

The timelines do not include the time the proponent, Benga Mining Ltd., will take to gather information required for the environmental assessment.
