Notice determination

March 16, 2020 – Indigenous Services Canada has determined that the proposed Batchewana - New Water Treatment Plant Construction in Goulais Mission is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

The determination was based on a consideration of the following factors:

  • The water treatment plant will provide clean drinking water to the residents of Goulais Mission
  • An environmental assessment was conducted during the design stage, and mitigation measures have been proposed which will reduce the impact to the surrounding environment.

Implementation of mitigation measures is required for the project to address:

  • Monarch Butterflies: should any milkweed be noted in the area, then removal will be minimized to the maximum extent possible under the project
  •  Tree clearing: any clearing of trees will be conducted outside of bird breeding season for any species of birds identified in the work area
  • Intake pipe: the department of fisheries and oceans has been contacted and has approved the construction of the intake pipe into lake superior

Indigenous Services Canada is satisfied that that the carrying out of the project is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

Therefore, Indigenous Services Canada may carry out the project, exercise any power, perform any duty or function, or provide financial assistance to enable the project to be carried out in whole or in part.
