Wharf Demolition and Reconstruction – George Island, MB – Summer 2020/Winter 2021 – Public Comments Invited

January 30, 2020 – Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Small Craft Harbours Branch, must determine whether the proposed Wharf Demolition and Reconstruction – George Island, MB – Summer 2020/Winter 2021 project located on Lake Winnipeg is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this determination, Fisheries and Oceans Canada is inviting comments from the public respecting that determination. All comments received will be considered public and may be posted online. For more information, individuals should consult the Privacy Notice on the Registry website.

The Proposed Project

George Island Harbour, Manitoba is located on Lake Winnipeg, approximately 35 km Southwest of Poplar River and approximately 330 km North of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The harbour is a safe harbour for all users on the Lake and is under the administration of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) Small Craft Harbours Branch (SCH).

Small Craft Harbours Branch (SCH), is proposing to undertake the demolition and reconstruction of the wharf at the George Island Harbour. The scope of work includes the demolition of the existing wharf, and the construction of a new L-shaped timber wharf including new timber walkway, new timber wheel-guards and steel bollards. The project also includes additional harbour improvements and repairs to the remaining harbour infrastructure.
