Notice of Environmental Assessment Determination

Ottawa – January 4, 2013 - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) commenced an environmental assessment for the Joyce Lake Direct Shipping Iron Ore Project located in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Agency determined on January 3, 2013 that a federal environmental assessment is required for the Joyce Lake Direct Shipping Iron Ore Project pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 (CEAA 2012)

In making this determination, the Agency considered the following factors as indicated in Section 10 of CEAA 2012:

• the description of the Project provided by the proponent,
• the possibility that the carrying out of the Project may cause adverse environmental effects,
• any comments received from the public within 20 days, and
• the results of any relevant study conducted by a committee established under section 73 or 74 of CEAA 2012.
