The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has received a project description from Canadian Nuclear Laboratories for the proposed In Situ Decommissioning of the Whiteshell Reactor #1 (the Project) at the Whiteshell Laboratories site located in Pinawa, Manitoba.

The project involves the in situ decommissioning of the Whiteshell Reactor #1.

The CNSC has determined that the project requires a federal environmental assessment (EA) pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 (CEAA 2012). An EA under CEAA 2012 is a planning and decision-making tool. Its objectives are to minimize or avoid adverse environmental effects before they occur, incorporate environmental factors into decision making, and identify the elements of a follow-up monitoring program.

Participant Funding Program

The CNSC has established a Participant Funding Program (PFP) to enhance participation in its regulatory processes. Funding for this project will be offered for participation at various stages throughout the EA and Commission hearing process. The availability of PFP funding for this project will be announced shortly and the notice of the availability of funding will include further details on the application process and amounts available.

Please visit the CNSC's PFP notices and latest updates Web page for more information, including the application process.
