Notice of Commencement of an Environmental Assessment

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has received a project description from Canadian Nuclear Laboratories for the proposed Near Surface Disposal Facility Project located on the Chalk River Laboratories (CRL) site, within the boundaries of the Corporation of the Town of Deep River.

The project is a proposed engineered disposal facility for low-level waste planned for the CRL site.

The CNSC has determined that the project requires a federal environmental assessment (EA) pursuant to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 (CEAA 2012). An EA under CEAA 2012 is a planning and decision-making tool. Its objectives are to minimize or avoid adverse environmental effects before they occur, and incorporate environmental factors into decision making.

Participant Funding Program

The CNSC has established a Participant Funding Program (PFP) to enhance participation in its regulatory processes. Funding for this project will be offered for participation at various stages throughout the EA and Commission hearing process. The availability of PFP funding for this project will be announced shortly, and the notice of the availability of participant funding will include further details on the application process and amounts available.

Please visit the CNSC's PFP notices and latest updates Web page for more information, including the application process.

If you have questions about the CNSC's PFP, please contact the PFP administrator toll-free at 1-800-668-5284, or by e-mail at cnsc.pfp.ccsn@canada.ca.
