Marathon Platinum Group Metals and Copper Mine Project – Joint Review Panel Disbanded

October 31, 2014 – The Minister of the Environment, Leona Aglukkaq, taking into consideration the views of the Government of Ontario, has disbanded the Joint Review Panel established to conduct the environmental assessment of the proposed Marathon Mine project in northern Ontario.

The proponent, Stillwater Canada Inc., has indicated that it does not plan to proceed with the project at this time. The environmental assessment of the project is on hold however, it is not being terminated. Should the proponent determine that it wants to proceed with the current project, a review panel would be appointed and the environmental assessment would resume.

On August 9, 2011, the federal and provincial Environment Ministers established a Joint Review Panel to conduct an environmental assessment of the Marathon Mine project.

The proponent had proposed the construction and operation of an open-pit mine and mill for the purpose of extracting and processing ore containing copper and platinum group metals near the town of Marathon, Ontario.

Documents related to the environmental assessment are available on the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry at ceaa.gc.ca reference number 54755.
