Marathon Platinum Group Metals and Copper Mine Project in Ontario – Funding Awarded for Participation in the Environmental Assessment – Phase II

OTTAWA – October 17, 2011 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has awarded a total of $150,000 to six applicants to support their participation in the joint panel review of the proposed Marathon Platinum Group Metals and Copper Mine Project (the Project) in Ontario.

Funding recipients are: Citizens for Responsible Industry in Northwestern Ontario; The Federation of Ontario Naturalists; Northwatch Coalition for Environmental Project; Environment North; MiningWatch Canada; and Great Lakes United.

This Phase II funding is provided to help successful applicants prepare for and participate in the conduct of the joint review panel process, including public hearings. A committee independent of the review process assessed the applications for funding and provided recommendations on funding awards. The committee’s report, along with further information on the Project, is available on the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, at www.ceaa-acee.gc.ca, under reference number 10-05-54755.

Stillwater Canada Inc. proposes to develop and operate the Marathon Platinum Group Metals and Copper Mine Project, approximately 10 kilometres north of the Town of Marathon. This project involves the establishment and operation of an open pit mine and mill for the purpose of extracting and processing ore containing copper and platinum group metals.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the potential environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to avoid or mitigate those effects, in support of sustainable development.
