Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Site C Clean Energy Project – Invitation to Comment and Federal Funding Available

The proposed Site C Clean Energy Project (the Project) consists of constructing and operating a dam and 1100-megawatt hydroelectric generating station on the Peace River in north-eastern British Columbia (B.C.).

The proposed Project is subject to review under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and B.C.’s Environmental Assessment Act. The Project has been referred to an assessment by a joint review panel.

Public Comment Period

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEA Agency) and the B.C. Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) are inviting public comments on the draft agreement to conduct a harmonized environmental assessment, including the establishment of a joint review panel. The draft agreement provides information on the process for conducting the review, outlines the joint review panel terms of reference and identifies the timelines associated with the key steps of the cooperative process.

The public has 30 days to submit comments on the draft agreement, from October 7, 2011 until November 7, 2011. All comments received during the comment period will be considered.

$140,000 Available for Public Participation

The CEA Agency is making available $140,000 under its participant funding program to assist individuals and groups to participate in the environmental assessment process for this project.
