Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway Project – Federal Funding Allocated to Support Participation in – the Environmental Assessment

OTTAWA - July 26, 2011 - The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has allocated $54,420 to two applicants to support their participation in the federal environmental assessment of the proposed Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk Highway project located in the Northwest Territories.

The funding recipients are: the Joint Secretariat - Inuvialuit Settlement Region, on behalf of the Tuktoyaktuk - Inuvik Highway Working Group, and the Inuvialuit Regional Corporation.

This funding is allocated through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency and is intended to support public participation in upcoming steps in the environmental assessment process.

On September 27, 2010, the Agency announced that the project had been referred to an environmental assessment by a review panel. The federal review panel process was subsequently substituted by the process of the Inuvialuit Environmental Impact Review Board.

A funding review committee, independent of the environmental assessment process, was established to assess the requests for funding for this project. The committee's report, the Agency President's funding allocation decision report, and further information on the project, are available on the Agency's Web site, in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under reference number 10-08-58081.

The Hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk, the Town of Inuvik, and the Government of the Northwest Territories are proposing to construct, operate and maintain a 140 kilometer all-weather highway from the Town of Inuvik to the Hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
