Deep Geologic Repository for Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive Wastes Project – Federal Funding Allocated to Participate in the Environmental Assessment

OTTAWA – June 29, 2011 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has allocated $175,000 to seven applicants to support their participation in the federal environmental assessment of Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) proposed project to construct and operate a facility for the long-term disposal of low and intermediate level radioactive waste.

The funding recipients are: Sierra Club Canada, Northwatch Coalition for Environmental Protection, Power Workers’ Union, Canadian Environmental Law Association, Huron-Grey-Bruce Citizens Committee on Nuclear Waste, Great Lakes United, and the International Institute of Concern for Public Health.

This funding is allocated through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency and is intended to support public participation in the review of the Environmental Impact Statement submitted by the project proponent, and to support preparation for and participation in public hearings.

A funding review committee, independent of the environmental assessment process, was established to assess the requests for funding for this project. The committee’s report, along with further information on the project, is available on the Agency’s website, in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry, under reference number 06-05-17520.

OPG is proposing to construct and operate a deep geologic repository for the long-term disposal of low and intermediate level radioactive waste at the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station, located on the Bruce Peninsula along the shores of Lake Huron near Kincardine. The project will hold waste currently stored on the Bruce nuclear site in the interim Western Waste Management Facility, as well as waste produced from the continued operations of nuclear generating stations at Bruce, Pickering and Darlington, Ontario. The repository would not be used to store used nuclear fuel.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
