Star-Orion South Diamond Project – Federal Funding Awarded to Participate in the Environmental Assessment

OTTAWA – August 27, 2010 – The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency has awarded $7,595 to the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation in support of their participation in the federal environmental assessment of the proposed Star-Orion South Diamond Project in Saskatchewan.

This funding is awarded through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency and is being provided to assist the recipient in participating in upcoming steps in the comprehensive study process, including the review of the comprehensive study report.

A funding review committee examined the request for funding. The committee’s report, along with further information on the project, is available in the Canadian Environmental Assessment Registry on the Agency’s website, under reference number 09-03-46277.

Shore Gold Inc. is proposing to construct, operate, maintain and eventually decommission an open-pit diamond mine, processing facilities and associated infrastructure in the Fort à la Corne Provincial Forest located approximately 60 km east of Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. The proposal includes the physical works and activities associated with the construction, operation and decommissioning of the following project components: stream crossings related to a proposed access corridor; on-site roadways and power/gas lines; site water management facilities that would result in the harmful alteration, disruption or destruction of fish habitat or impact navigation, including dewatering facilities and water diversion channels; and explosives mixing (factory) and storage (magazine) facilities.

The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency administers the federal environmental assessment process, which identifies the environmental effects of proposed projects and measures to address those effects, in support of sustainable development.
