Murray River Coal Project — Additional Federal Funding Allocated to Support Aboriginal Participation

August 25, 2015 — The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) has allocated an additional $15,000 to the Sucker Creek First Nation to assist its participation in the environmental assessment of the proposed Murray River Coal Project, located near Tumbler Ridge in British Columbia.

This funding is made available through the Participant Funding Program administered by the Agency. It will enable participation in the environmental assessment of the project, specifically reviewing and providing comments on the draft Environmental Assessment Report and the potential environmental assessment conditions.

The Proposed Project

HD Mining International Ltd. proposes the construction, operation and decommissioning of an underground coal mine and supporting infrastructure, including a 5.8 kilometre rail load-out. The proposed project is located 12.5 kilometres southwest of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia and would produce six million tonnes of metallurgical coal per year for an estimated mine life of 31 years.
