Deep Geologic Repository Joint Review Panel Announces Deadlines for Closing Remarks from Hearing Participants

September 19, 2014 - The Joint Review Panel for the Deep Geologic Repository Project for Low and Intermediate Level Radioactive Waste (DGR) invites registered hearing participants and the proponent to submit written closing remarks.

Closing remarks from participants including Aboriginal groups and government participants are due October 9, 2014. The deadline for closing remarks from the proponent, Ontario Power Generation, is October 19, 2014. Closing remarks are optional and are not required from any party.

As detailed in the Procedure for Closing Remarks by Proponent and Registered Hearing Participants , written closing remarks are to summarize the position and/or the opinions of the registered participant or proponent on the proposed DGR project or any aspect of the review. Closing remarks are to be based on information that has already been presented to the Panel and may not include new information.

Once the Panel has reviewed the closing remarks and decided that it has obtained all of the information it requires, the review record will be closed and no further information will be accepted by the Panel.

Within 90 days of the close of the review record, the Joint Review Panel will submit an environmental assessment report to the federal Minister of the Environment outlining its conclusions, rationale and recommendations. Subject to the Government of Canada's decision, the Panel may then be authorized to make a decision on the application for a Licence to Prepare a Site and Construct the DGR.

Recordings of the webcasts of the hearing sessions are available on the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission website. Documents submitted or generated as part of the review are considered public and posted on the online public registry, reference number 17520.
