Installation of two Pneumatic Ship Unloaders at the Port of Trois-Rivières to secure supply in alumina and coke for the plant.

The raw materials required for Alcoa Deschambault's operations are alumina and calcined petroleum coke, which arrive by ship at the Port of Trois-Rivières and are then unloaded and shipped by train to the plant.

In order to achieve a more reliable and optimal reception of these raw materials, we plan to install the following equipment on platform #17:

  • 2 Pneumatic Ship Unloaders on rails for a capacity of 350 mt/h each.
  • An unloading conveyor to transfer the unloaded raw material to the conveyors which are already in place. Those conveyors will then transport the material to the storage silos at the port.

The equipment will run on electric power. Each pneumatic ship unloader, as well as the unloading conveyor, will be equipped with dust collectors (3 in total) to control dust emissions. Dust emissions being a concern for neighboring residents, this project will ensure a better performance compared to the equipment in place.

To ensure compliance with current standards for ambient noise levels, a study will be completed before and after the project's execution. Alcoa's noise contribution must not exceed 70 dBA for the one-hour reference interval. This criterion has been communicated to the equipment manufacturers during the bidding process and a noise level test will be done during the Factory Acceptance Test. If needed, silencers will be added to comply with the standards.

A new electric line will be installed by Hydro-Quebec to power a 25kV/4,16kV dry-type transformer between the alumina silo and the building #3. The current will be routed to the pneumatic ship unloaders with a cable path that runs under the conveyors.
