Public Comment Period on Intent to Make a Determination
Residential Garage Replacement

July 24, 2020 — The Department of National Defence must decide whether the proposed project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.

To help inform this decision, the Department of National Defence is inviting comments from the public on the project and its potential effects on the environment. The Proposed Project

The Canadian Forces Housing Agency is proposing to carry out replacement of the existing dilapidated residential garages D81 and RA9, as follows:

Existing building D81, a two-bay garage structure (70+ years old), will be replaced with a newly constructed three-bay garage structure repositioned 3 metres (10 feet ) rearwards to allow for vehicle parking. The proposed project is expected to consist of demolition and disposal of existing garage, reconfiguration of the existing retaining wall alongside it, construction of new 7.3 metres by 11 metres (24 feet by 36 feet) wooden frame three-bay garage, and excavation of approximately 100 cubic metres (130 cubic yards) surplus soil (assumed to be contaminated) and disposal of soil at a licensed soil disposal facility.

Existing building RA9, a single garage structure (50+ years old), will be replaced with a newly constructed slightly larger single garage. The proposed project is expected to consist of demolition and disposal of old garage structure, construction of new 4.3 metres by 6.7 metres (14 feet by 22 feet) wooden frame structure single garage, excavation of approximately 12 cubic metres (16 cubic yards) of surplus soil (assumed to be contaminated), and disposal of soil at a licenced soil disposal facility.
